Danielle Collins has posted a clip of her shutting down a heckler on social media during her third-round match against Romanian Jaqueline Cristian in Madrid. The American star rallied from a set down to continue her 15-match unbeaten streak at the top-tier clay tournament.
Collins began the match on the wrong foot after losing the first set 3-6. However, the 30-year-old had learned some new tricks from her first-round Madrid Open match when she came from behind to 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8) against Olga Danilovic.
In the second set against Cristian, Collins fought hard to remain in the match until 4-4 before running away with the victory. She won her next eight of the nine-game points to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Meanwhile, after the match, a viral video about the incident in the match was posted on various tennis social media platforms. In the video, Collins was seen shunning down a disrespectful heckler while being set down. The Miami Open champion went on to post the clips unapologetically on her Instagram story with a mic emoji.
You come here and play. You do what I do. Okay? Have a little more respect.Danielle Collins said to the heckler
Regardless of that, Collins’s unbeaten streak since the middle of March has been mind-blowing. The WTA No. 15 defeated Elena Rybakina to win her first Masters 1000 title and also won the Charleston green clay event after two weeks. She will be hoping to continue with her outstanding record at the Madrid Open.
Danielle Collins to face Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of the Madrid Open
Danielle Collins will face World No. 2 and Mutua Madrid Open defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round. Sabalenka defeated American teenager Robin Montgomery in her third-round match, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-4, to continue in Madrid.
Notably, this is a very big mountain to climb for Collins, who has failed to win Sabalenka in her last four outings. She has earned three Top 10 wins against Ons Jabeur, Maria Sakkari, and Elena Rybakina, but Sabalenka will be her biggest victory if she eventually wins.
Sabalenka has yet to reach the quarterfinals of any tournament since winning the Australian Open. Collins will be hoping to counter the Belarusian poor form to earn an upset despite not being a favorite. Her ferocious forehand will be her major strength going against the defending champion.
