Formula E is the pinnacle of electric racing. The series was started in 2014 and has had carmakers such as Jaguar, Porsche, and BMW compete. Ferrari, the symbol of racing is yet to make its mark in the world of electric motorsport. However, it seems that the iconic Italian carmaker has held discussions to potentially join the series in the future.
Ferrari recently inaugurated its first-ever electrification plant in Maranello. The ‘e-building’ will build the carmaker’s electric vehicles and was constructed at a cost of over $500 million. The Italian auto giant will release its first-ever electric vehicle by the end of 2025.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds did not deny rumors of being in talks with Ferrari over a future entry. The 51-year-old was delighted to see Maranello’s commitment towards electric mobility via the e-building. Dodds further highlighted that the Prancing Horse was finally focusing on full-electric vehicles instead of hybrids.
Maybe. They’ve announced an electrification plant in Italy and talked about a future electrical line for them. First time they’ve said it as a pure electric line as opposed to a hybrid.Jeff Dodds told Motorsport.com
A Ferrari spokesperson mentioned that the Scuderia was focused on its efforts in F1 and the World Endurance Championship. Moreover, the spokesperson highlighted Ferrari’s entry into the world of sailing announced earlier this year.
Our focus today is on F1 and endurance - and [we] have recently announced we will be taking the race where we never have before - waterFerrari spokesperson told Motorsport.com
Jeff Dodds claims Ferrari would ‘elevate’ Formula E
The Formula E boss admitted that having the Italian carmaker would be substantial for the championship. Jeff Dodds highlighted the involvement of Porsche and Maserati in the all-electric series. However, Dodds admitted that the two carmakers had exited motorsport previously while the Scuderia has always been involved in racing.
I think it [having Ferrari involved] would elevate the championship. We’re super lucky because Porsche has the same kind of motorsport history that runs through their blood and Maserati do as well, although they obviously came out of motorsport at a time when Ferrari stayed in.Jeff Dodds explained
Moreover, the 51-year-old highlighted the legacy and recognition that Ferrari would bring if Maranello joins Formula E. Jeff Dodds emphasized on the millions of Tifosi which rally behind the Prancing Horse every race. Dodds labeled the Scuderia’s loyal fanbase as ‘unbelievable.’
I think what Ferrari bring is, other than more motorsport credibility, they bring this loyal fanbase, the tifosi, which is unbelievable.Jeff Dodds asserted
Ferrari would have a massive impact on Formula E. The all-electric series could explode in popularity with the Scuderia’s arrival. Moreover, Maranello could benefit from the Formula E powertrains in its development of electric vehicles. However, it remains to be seen if the Italian carmaker does decide to race in an electric championship.
